NHS Hypertension Case-Finding Service
Free NHS Blood Pressure Checks in Nechells
High blood pressure usually has no symptoms at all, which is exactly what makes it dangerous — it quietly raises your risk of heart attack and stroke. Through the NHS Hypertension Case-Finding Service, Bloomsbury Pharmacy offers free blood pressure checks to adults aged 40 and over who have not already been diagnosed with high blood pressure.
Why Get Checked at the Pharmacy?
- Convenience: No need for a GP appointment. Walk in or book a time that suits you.
- Accuracy: We use clinically validated equipment to ensure accurate readings.
- Regular Monitoring: We make it easy for you to monitor your pressure regularly, which is key for early detection and management.
- Expert Advice: Our pharmacist can explain your reading, discuss factors that influence blood pressure (like diet, exercise, and stress), and advise on next steps.
How the Service Works
The service is free on the NHS, takes only a few minutes, and in most cases needs no appointment.
Who it is for
Adults aged 40 and over who have not been diagnosed with high blood pressure. If you are under 40 but have a family history of hypertension, or you are simply concerned, ask us — we can usually still check you.
1. The check in the pharmacy
You will be invited into our private consultation room where a member of our team will take your blood pressure reading using an upper arm monitor. We may take several readings to ensure accuracy.
2. What your reading means
The pharmacist will explain what your numbers mean (systolic and diastolic pressure) and compare them against the recommended healthy ranges.
3. 24-hour monitoring, if you need it
If your reading in the pharmacy is raised, a single check is not enough to diagnose anything — blood pressure moves around during the day. We can offer you ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (ABPM): a small monitor you wear for 24 hours that takes readings as you go about a normal day.
- Normal reading: we will give you general lifestyle advice and you are welcome to come back and be re-checked.
- Raised reading: we will fit you with a 24-hour monitor and arrange a time for you to return it.
- Your results go to your GP: we share the findings with your surgery, who will contact you about diagnosis and any treatment.
